GMBA mourns the loss of founder Jouko Huju
It is with profound sadness that GMBA announced the passing of Jouko Huju, a distinguished leader and visionary in the marine industry.

He leaves behind a legacy of collaboration and unwavering dedication that has profoundly shaped the Finish Boating sector and touched the global marine industry sector.
Veda Pretorius, Chair of GMBA, commented, “Jouko was the Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Global Marine Business Advisors (GMBA), a role in which he demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to the growth and development of marine and boating companies worldwide. Under his leadership, GMBA established a robust network of industry experts across 22 countries, providing invaluable strategic guidance for companies seeking to expand their market presence. Jouko was both colleague and friend to all GMBA consultants. Myself and fellow GMBA consultants are devastated by this loss and our thoughts go out to his family.”
Throughout his illustrious career, spanning over four decades, Jouko played a pivotal role in promoting export initiatives and trade development within the marine sector. Jouko’s influence extended to the Finnish Marine Industries Federation where he served as CEO for 21 years, growing the organisation to represent 280 companies and establishing it as a cornerstone of the Finnish marine industry’s development.
His contributions to the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) further underscored his commitment to advancing the industry on a global scale, serving two terms as President, and shaping policies that benefited the marine community.
His most recent tenure as Executive Director of the International Federation of Boat Show Organisers (IFBSO) was marked by a comprehensive turnaround strategy that revitalised the organization, enhancing its global standing and fostering collaboration among boat show organisers worldwide.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jouko was a mentor and inspiration to many. He was known for his passionate advocacy for sustainable practices within the boating industry and his steadfast belief in the power of collaboration and dialogue among stakeholders. His work with various public-private partnerships exemplified his dedication to fostering meaningful connections in the export sector. He was a firm believer in lifelong learning, having completed both an MBA and a Doctorate in Business Administration, and he instilled this value in those around him.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jouko was a true friend. He had a way of making everyone feel valued and heard, always taking the time to listen and offer support. His kindness, wisdom, and infectious enthusiasm for life will be deeply missed.

Jouko is survived by his wife Leija and two daughters.
