Finding a space for your car and trailer is easier than ever at Torquay’s popular Fisherman’s Beach boat ramp with a major parking upgrade complete.
Funded by the reinvestment of recreational boaters’ licence and registration fees through the Victorian Government’s Better Boating Fund ($800,000) as well as the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action ($650,000), the new-look asphalt carpark is set to open later today.
Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) CEO Travis Dowling said the upgrade would be welcomed by the local community, including fishers and divers.
“One of the fundamental elements to a good day on the water is being able to find a space for your car and trailer once you’ve launched, which is why we’re improving parking at ramps like this throughout the state,” he said.
“The carpark now has 24 spaces big enough for your car and trailer, better pedestrian crossings through the area, a shared path and designated parking for boaters with low mobility.
“We look forward to seeing fishers launch here to fish for snapper, King George whiting, kingfish or dive for rock lobster and it’s the closest ramp to artificial reef modules installed in 2019 between Torquay and Breamlea to provide habitat for these species and more.”
New features include kayak drop-off area, two outdoor showers, bike parking and sealed surface that will lighten in coming months to blend with the natural beach feel.
A DDA-compliant beach access ramp has also been installed, making it easier for young families, wheelchair users, and people with mobility devices to access the beach.
A popular café is located alongside the carpark, providing boaters with a convenient coffee stop before a morning fishing trip or after an early session on the water.
Great Ocean Road Coastal and Parks Authority Director of Infrastructure and Planning Cath Olive said the project had further enhanced a much-loved community asset.
“We’re really excited to see this project come to life at Fishermans Beach,” she said.
“These improvements reflect our commitment to making coastal infrastructure more accessible and inclusive for all. It’s a great win for the community and for everyone who loves this beautiful spot.”
