There was a terrific turn-out of volunteers from Fleurieu Peninsula marine rescue capabilities at Wirrina today for the annual regional multi-agency exercise.
Conducted under the auspices of the State Marine Rescue Committee, volunteers from Victor Harbor/Goolwa Sea Rescue, SA Sea Rescue Squadron (Wirrina and West Beach), Australian Volunteer Coast Guard SAF11 Kangaroo Island, Yankalilla Emergency Services SA State Emergency Service Marine Operations and Surf Life Saving SA (Emergency Operations, jet rescue boat and RPAS) came together under the coordination of specialists from the South Australia Police Water Operations Unit to respond to a marine emergency scenario.
The Exercise provides a valuable opportunity toward ensuring appropriate levels of preparedness and interoperability between the organisations, validating plans and fostering cooperation and camaraderie.
The activity concluded with a ‘hot debrief’ where the ‘lessons learned’ were discussed over a well-earned sausage sizzle, notably cooked this year by ‘The Admiral’ Darryl Wright, under trying windy conditions.
Well done to all involved. Another terrific example of volunteers giving their valuable time to make their communities a safer place to live and recreate.
