Community members can now enjoy a safer and more accessible Carrington foreshore and boat launching into Throsby Creek.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said boaters have recently started using Transport for NSW’s newly upgraded boat ramp and pontoon.
“We have already received some very supportive feedback from local boaters who are thankful for the local investment in boating infrastructure,” Mr Martin said.
“One boater has described the boat ramp as having gone from the worst boat ramp to the best, perfect on any wind and any tide.”
The $1 million project also involved capping and sealing remnant asbestos cement sheet, identified by the Environmental Protection Agency on the foreshore north towards the Newcastle Rowing Club.
“Contamination in the area was contained in a sandstone block and sealed, and an ongoing management plan has been put in place.
“The upgraded boat ramp and floating pontoon will ease congestion on the waterway and make it easier for boaters to tie up their vessels, launch their vessels and retrieve trailers.”
Mr Martin said this project is a great example of government working with, and really listening to the local community.
“Ultimately the community informed the final design of the remediation, sea wall and boat ramp improvements. We were able to significantly improve the assets we have to deliver a quality recreational facility that can help support a healthier and happier community,” said Mr Martin.
“This investment by Transport for NSW supported up to 30 jobs through design and construction, while upgrading a foreshore area that will be enjoyed by generations to come.”
