Despite the wind, the warm and sunny conditions brought many boaters out onto the state’s coastal waterways over the weekend, with Marine Rescue NSW volunteers performing 65 rescues on Saturday and Sunday.
Among them was the pictured tow by Marine Rescue Newcastle rescue vessel NC30 of an 11 metre catamaran with two people aboard after it suffered engine failure.
Marine Rescue Shoalhaven vessel Shoalhaven 20 responded to a cabin cruiser that had broken its mooring in the strong winds and had blown near oyster leases near Goodnight Island, with the crew of SA20 using a spare anchor to secure it.
On Sydney Harbour, Marine Rescue Port Jackson rescue vessels PJ31 and PJ20 as well as a Marine Area Command – NSW Police Force responded to a sailor who had been struck by a yacht boom and knocked into the water. PJ30 took the injured sailor to a waiting ambulance at Rose Bay for assessment, and then transported him to Hunters Hill.
On the Mid North Coast Marine Rescue Port Macquarie vessel PM30 assisted a 7 metre sail mono with two crew on board that had engine issues near the Port Macquarie bar, towing it to the safety of the Westport Boat Ramp.
Vessels with fuel, battery and engine issues again made up the bulk of call outs, with Marine Rescue NSW again reminding boaters to ensure their vessel has the necessary fuel for their journey and an engine and battery in good order that have been recently checked.
