Industry members of the Hobsons Bay precinct gathered on 20 July at RYCV, joining BIAV’s Steve Walker and Mary Papantoniou, to discuss and plan for a September Industry Immersion Day for potential industry entrants. Joining Steve and Mary were Doug Hem (The Antifoul Doctor), Dan Rushbrook (Rushbrook Boatbuilder & Marine Services), Peter Roberts (Holdfast Marine), Jim Need and Keld Hansen (Mariner Engineering), Scott and Dani O’Hare (Aussie Boat Sales), Michael Neumann and Andy Warner (RYCV), Terry Oakley (Savages Wharf), Ned Files and Alex (Hightide Boating), and Janet Wilks (Wilksie Marine)
The group recognised the skills and labour shortages that are apparent, as well as the need for action to be taken The group undertook to join with BIAV and RYCV, and be part of the 14 September Industry Immersion Day. On the day, targeted upper-secondary students, who’ve already shown an inclination toward marine, will be welcomed to RYCV, as well as to a range of local businesses, where an array of trades will be on display for them to watch, ask questions about, and even take part in. The lifestyle of working on, and around boats, as well as marinas and the waterfront, will also be part of the day. As will information about joining the industry, what’s on offer, and how to get involved.
