Vale Robert (Bob) Basham

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our esteemed industry colleague and friend, Robert (Bob) Basham. Bob passed away peacefully yesterday morning at Northern Beaches Hospital following a short illness. Born on 18 September 1928, he was 96 years old.

Bob was a true leader, a visionary, a mentor to many, and a legend within the boating industry. His unwavering passion and support for sailing left a lasting legacy.

It was through his vision and determination that the Try Sailing Days initiative was launched in the mid-1990s, introducing thousands of young—and not-so-young—people to the joys of sailing.

Widely regarded as one of the most well-liked figures in the marine industry, Bob was honoured with Life Membership of the Boating Industry Association (BIA) in 2004 for his outstanding contributions.

Bob’s career began in 1943 with W. Kopsen and Co. In 1968, he established the iconic business R.W. Basham, which served the marine industry under his and his family’s leadership for many years. Today, the business continues under new stewardship.
