Boating enthusiasts in Illawarra urged to maintain their craft amid a spike in marine rescues

Marine search and rescue missions in the Illawarra region of NSW reached nearly 500 last year, and it has given local businesses cause to urge all boat and jet ski users to ensure they are water-ready before heading out.

According to Battery World Shellharbour and Fairy Meadow store owner Adam Bubb, many of the region’s incidents in 2024 could have been prevented with better boat maintenance.
“We see it all too often, people haven’t used their boat or jet skis all season and don’t realise the battery is flat until they’re already out on the water,” he said.

“A flat or faulty battery can ruin a day on the water and leave boaters in a dangerous situation.

Adam is emphasising the importance of ensuring boats and jet skis are in safe, working condition before venturing out on the water and is offering owners complimentary checks.

“Our free battery checks only take a few minutes and can help water-goers with that all-important reassurance before setting off.”

Adam and the teams at Battery World Shellharbour and Fairy Meadow are committed to supporting the local community, ensuring that locals and tourists can enjoy their summer fun stress free.

“We’re ready to go the extra mile to help, whether that means replacing a battery on-site at the marina or assisting tourists who are in a pinch,” he added.

“The summer season is a time when we all enjoy getting out on the water but it’s important to do it safely.”

Marine Rescue NSW Illawarra Inspector Stuart Massey emphasises the importance of boat battery maintenance.

“Marine Rescue NSW encourages all boaters to make sure their battery and engine are in good working order before every voyage,” he said.

“Ten per cent of all calls for assistance to Marine Rescue NSW are from skippers experiencing battery issues on board their vessel.

“Battery failure can lead to life-threatening emergencies with disabled vessels at risk of capsizing or running aground.”

Bubb recommends that boat owners remain proactive and have their battery checked at least once a year.
