Australian Sailing launches Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategy

Australian Sailing has presented its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Strategy for 2025-2028.

Designed to communicate Australian Sailing’s strategic plan and wholesale commitment to increasing access to sailing, championing diversity and creating inclusive and welcoming environments for everyone, the DEI Strategy unveils a vision for an inclusive future within the sport.

The DEI Strategy was developed in collaboration with an external DEI Advisory Group, formed in 2023, with a focus on strengthening diversity, equity and inclusion in all forms across all communities throughout Australia. The external Advisory Group experts in consultation with clubs and class associations and Australian Sailing developed the strategy over the last 8 months.

The strategy has five focus areas to achieve the vision and mission. The strategy articulates not only what will be done to achieve the desired outcome but also what success looks like for each of the five focus areas:

  • Environment
  • Connection & Engagement
  • Education
  • Leadership
  • Visibility

Australian Sailing CEO, Ben Houston, says he is proud to present the DEI Strategy which will aim to increase participation amongst underrepresented groups and celebrate diverse contributions at all levels in sailing.

“On behalf of Australian Sailing, I’m pleased to present our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategy which will guide our future discussions and actions regardless of topic or context,” said Houston

“As an organisation, we know this is just the first step on a meaningful journey, and acknowledge there will be opportunity for future development as we make progress through targeted initiatives and collaborations with clubs, classes and the community.

“Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is a strategic foundation of Australian Sailing’s strategy, Sailing 2032, and we want to see sailing reflecting our communities. Inclusive sport equals inclusive communities, and Sailing is part of this.

“I extend my sincerest thanks to the DEI Advisory Group whose leadership and commitment have helped to make this possible,” he said.
