An integral event on the annual Australian Sailing calendar, Discover Sailing Month has once again returned to sailing clubs around the country this November.
Intended to introduce individuals and families to their local sailing club through free Discover Sailing Day events or open days, Discover Sailing Month is an accessible opportunity for participants looking to make their start in the sport.
South Australian-based Christies Sailing Club (CSC) is one of many rigging up to host a community focused event, with their free, all ages event set to take over the picturesque Christies Beach Esplanade from 9am-1pm ACDT on Sunday November 17.
For CSC Principle Kenneth Treharne, their upcoming Discover Sailing Day is a great way for those, who are new to sailing, to give the sport a go.
“We receive a lot of interest from the public coming past the esplanade throughout the year about getting into sailing”, said Mr Treharne.
“We find holding our annual Discover Sailing Day is a great way to safely introduce the public to our amazing sport and to attract new members”.
On the day, the public will have the opportunity to take to the water in a range of sail craft, under the supervision of experienced CSC members and instructors.
Participants will also have the opportunity to meet CSC volunteers and ask questions
over refreshments provided at the club.
However, Treharne feels obliged to warn that sailing can be addictive.
“Sailing is a great way to deal with the day-to-day stresses of daily life,” he said.
“There is nothing like getting out on the water and feeling a sense of calm.
“Sailing is a sport that anyone can get involved with, no matter their age or ability, and we hope to get the public involved in sailing, so they too get to experience the sense of comradery and community we all get from this amazing little club.”
Offering everything from keelboat and dinghy sailing to Sailability opportunities, Discover Sailing Month will see hundreds of new participants visit clubs throughout November and the following summer months.
