Spring into free Seymour Fishing Festival

Families looking for a fun and fishy day in the great outdoors can reel in a new hobby at the Seymour Fishing Festival on Sunday 27 October at Goulburn Park.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said the free event will have something for everyone including ‘come and try’ fishing clinics for kids, seafood cooking demonstrations, trout stocking and live music.

The festival is hosted by the Mitchell Shire and Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) and complements the Victorian Government’s $96 million investment package to improve fishing, boating, piers and aquaculture.

Women in Recreational Fishing and Boating (WIRFAB) leaders along with volunteers from Fishcare and the Sugarloaf Creek Angling Club will get the next generation hooked on fishing through eight learn-to-fish VicFishKids sessions for beginners, with rods and bait provided.

Catchable size rainbow trout from the VFA’s Snobs Creek hatchery will give youngsters real-life learning opportunities about fishing in a safe and supportive environment.

For lovers of seafood, a local chef from the Prince of Wales Hotel will showcase delicious recipes featuring trout to sample on the day and cook at home for family and friends.

Other event attractions include:

  • Fish anatomy explainers from VFA scientists and Fisheries Officers with their education trailer
  • VFA education team with fish themed activities for the kids
  • Fishing simulator with the Knox Boat Fishing Club
  • Live music from Bentley Grattan and the Royal Navy Band
  • Entertainment for kids including face painting, plaster arts, a magician and bubble performer
  • Selfies with VFA’s ‘Rodney the Rainbow Trout’ mascot, prizes and giveaways
  • Animal experiences with Snake Safe Victoria including gliders, pythons, crocodiles and dingoes
  • Kelly Sports activities for children to burn off some energy
  • Hot food for sale from a Lions Club barbecue, and a coffee van.
