Breakwater Marina Achieves International Clean Marina Accreditation

MIA have congratulated Breakwater Marina and the team for being accredited as an International Clean Marina!

This fantastic achievement underscores the marina’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices within our community.

Breakwater Marina’s path to accreditation was supported by the Clean Marina Accreditation Subsidy from the Queensland Government’s Department of Tourism & Sport. This initiative aimed to enhance business capabilities and promote tourism by funding targeted accreditation and training efforts.

The Breakwater Marina community, vessel owners, industry partners, and local marine trades were integral in helping the Breakwater team attain this accreditation, actively facilitating and encouraging others to adopt the environmental practices implemented at the marina.

The marina has introduced various sustainable practices, including dedicated recycling, community veggie gardens, waste reduction initiatives, compost bins, fish-friendly products, and environmentally considerate landscape maintenance. The support from the community has been invaluable in these sustainability efforts.

The Clean Marinas Program is a voluntary accreditation system aimed at reducing ‘non-point source pollution’ associated with boating and marina facilities. It promotes clean water and air, helping marinas, yacht clubs, slipways/boatyards, and industry operators align with international environmental standards. Currently, there are over 300 marinas across Australia, with 60 accredited as Clean Marinas.
