The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is encouraging all Australians to be lifejacket-smart this National Safe Boating Week 2023 (NSBW).
This year, NSBW focuses on the importance of lifejackets, wearing the right type of lifejacket and carrying out lifejacket maintenance to ensure reliable operation.
It also highlights the importance of being able to raise the alarm by carrying a distress beacon.
NSBW commences today (30 September) and will conclude next Friday (6 October), which is also Wear Your Lifejacket Day.
AMSA Acting Manager of Vessel Operations Shontelle Chamtaprieo explained NSBW is an important opportunity to remind us all that safe boating practices can make the difference between life and death on the water.
“Lifejackets and distress beacons significantly increase the chances of survival in boating incidents, making NSBW relevant to everyone from commercial vessel operators to boating enthusiasts and the general public,” she said.
“Initiatives like NSBW help remind us to stay safe out on the water.”
AMSA is encouraging Australians to celebrate Wear Your Lifejacket Day on Friday by sharing a photo of yourself (or of you with your team/family/friends/pet) wearing a lifejacket on social media with the hashtags #SafeBoating and/or #WearItToWork.
This annual event is a fun, educational way to highlight the various styles of lifejackets available and help increase awareness of safe boating practices.
