Many industry members will know former BIA Victoria Boat Show Manager Monica Tonner. Very soon, Monica, one of our former boating industry family members will undertake a special feat for a great cause.
On 20 August 2023, Monica will take on an extraordinary challenge for a cause closer to her heart… a courageous swim across the English Channel to raise funds and awareness for Mending Casts, a Cancer Charity. Monica aims to inspire others by conquering this gruelling 34km journey in approximately 14 hrs.
Taking on the English Channel swim is a challenge that cannot be done lightly. Monica is hoping her strong athletic and sailing background will hold her in good stead, having competed in half marathons, triathlons, Iron Man 70.3, Laser radial regattas, and many offshore sailing events including two Sydney to Hobart Yacht races. Based in Melbourne, Australia, Monica is well into a rigorous training program which includes daily pool training, swim squad sessions and open water swimming (a weekly average between 35 to 40km) including twice weekly strength and conditioning sessions at the gym. As part of the preparation required, she’s completed two Cold Swim camps in Melbourne and Sydney to qualify for the Channel swim, plus ultra-marathon swims and other distance events throughout the year. Up until she departs for the UK on 12th August, Monica continues to train under the guidance of head coaches Robert Butcher, Vlad Mravec and nutritionist Christine Robson.
Mending Casts offers respite retreats using fly-fishing to reconnect cancer patients with nature, provide relief from personal struggles, and foster a supportive community. Monica’s late father, Peter Tonner, found solace and positivity through fly-fishing during his battle with prostate cancer. With a target of $60k, your tax-deductible donation through the GoFundMe page can make a lasting impact by funding these transformative programs. All donations, no matter what size, are greatly appreciated.
Join Monica in her remarkable swim and support Mending Casts as they bring hope and healing to those facing cancer. Visit www.mendingcasts.org to learn more and contribute today.
Our best wishes to Monica for her swim.
