After 10 years with no apprenticeship training programs available for Certificate III in Marine Craft Construction for boat builders and shipwrights in South Australia, the situation has finally been rectified, thanks to the Boating Industry Association (BIA) and Australian Institute of Engineering (AIE).
For many years George Bolton from the BIA has been searching for a training provider to fill the training gap the industry faced. In 2021 George worked with AIE CEO Sam Tyagi to develop a program that would enable training in South Australia to return. In late 2021 AIE’s application for State funding was approved, with the apprentice training program launched in April this year.
Businesses in South Australia have jumped on board to support the program that has now created a training pathway for the industry. Fortnightly virtual training sessions incorporated with workplace visits during the year, allows apprentices from far and wide to participate with no barriers with travel commitments. Apprentices have taken to the new program, and are excited now to be able to train in the industry that they work.
